As new parents, it is necessary to know which foods are safe and unsafe for your child. Baby’s digestive systems is delicate and some food are not suited for them to eat at a certain age and others may lead to development of food allergies. Let’s take a look at some food items that you might think are safe for babies, but in reality, there are foods that are not allowed for babies.
Foods You Should Avoid Giving to Your Baby
As natural as it may look and sound. Infants under the age of one should not be given any form of honey (baked, raw, cooked). It can harbor Clostridium botulinum which is bad for babies, it produce botulinum spores that secrete toxins which can lead to weak cry, muscle weakening, constipation, decreased muscle tone, and worse paralysis. Infant’s intestinal track isn’t strong and developed enough to fight these toxins.
Babies under one should not eat much salt, as it is not good for their kidneys. If you want to give the same food to your baby, always remember to not add too much salt.
Giving cow’s milk to babies under age of one, will give them difficulty on their stomach to digest the proteins, and it contains minerals that can damage a baby’s kidney.
Sugar, Candy and Chocolates
Sugary treats are loaded with sugar, which can later alter to the development of their taste foundation. It can also keep them hyper and alive throughout the day and night. Plus, these are loaded with so much sugar. Other chocolate have also allergy contents that may put your baby to trigger some allergic reactions. Candies are also choking hazard.
Always check the nutrition labels of the food you choose to give to your little one. Avoid giving them foods that are high in saturated fats like chips, biscuits, cakes.
Whole nuts and peanuts
Whole nuts and peanuts should not be given to children under 5 years of age as they can choke them, you can always give them nuts if it is crushed or ground. It can also trigger allergic reaction if your baby has allergy history on foods.
Raw and Slightly Cooked Eggs
Raw eggs can contain salmonella which can harm your baby. It can cause fussiness and diarrhea. Avoid giving foods that has raw eggs like cakes, pastries, ice cream and other dairy products.
Raw or slightly cooked shellfish can increase the risk of food poisoning to your babies. Avoid giving mussels, clams, oysters.
Shark, Swordfish and Marlin
Try to refuse giving them shark, swordfish and marlin. The amount of mercury in these fish can affects the baby’s nervous system.
When you start introducing foods to your babies, make sure to continue breast feeding until they reach 12 months. Talk to your pediatrician about the risk of allergies. There are foods that are not allowed for babies so be careful always on giving them variety of foods.
